Smart climate control - Open office plan | Lindinvent

Equipment in an open floor plan for controlling ventilation, cooling, heating and lighting via duct-mounted room climate control unit DCV-RC and reactive supply air diffusers.

The reactive diffuser MTC or MTN is used together with room climate control unit DCV-RC. The system offers a solution that corresponds to the solution with the active diffuser TTC but where the requirement for flexibility is lower. Here the premises are assumed to be used in the same way as in the original design. The reactive diffuser is used to achieve full potential when it comes to maintain an attractive indoor climate even at lower flows. The energy consumption decreases with reduced air flows. The supply air diffuser MTC or MTN reaches the same good air dispersion performance and energy performance as the active device TTC. The reactive diffuser is completely mechanical. The mechanism provides a duct pressure-dependent opening degree based on counterweights.

Less flexibility
DCV-RC requires that signals from the presence sensor and room temperature sensor can be retrieved externally. This means that sensors need to be installed on the wall or in a duct. The possibility of a relatively simple change-over to cell offices is lost. DCV-RC controls the air to a number of diffusers. The air volume is distributed equally over the installed diffusers.

Conversion to an active diffuser system
TTC can be mounted in the same plenum box as MTC and MTN. This allows TTC to be retrofitted without the duct system having to be demolished. Conveniently, the reactive devices are placed with a distribution in the room which allows an officeization at a later stage.

Electrical installation
It is only room climate control unit DCV-RC that requires electrical installation and connection to the communication loop. Installation of external sensors may be added. In the case of the more flexible solution with active diffusers, electrical installation and connection to the communication loop is required for each diffuser.

A open plan office with supply air via the reactive device MTC/MTN and room climate control unit DCV-RC. The system offers a solution where the climate can be adapted by controlling the supply air flow and any additional heat needed.

DCV-RC consists of room climate controller RCX and a damper motor mounted on a damper with measuring flange. DCV-RC is equipped from factory with a duct temperature sensor for supply air temperature measurement and a flow/pressure sensor. A duct mounted temperature sensor for room temperature measurement and an external presence detector are mounted accessories.

The pressure and flow sensor together with an encoder on the damper motor ensures accurate flow control. The flow is set based on 3 different flow levels: minimum flow, presence flow and maximum flow. Without presence, the room goes into economy mode, i.e. to a minimum flow. When presence is detected, the flow is increased to the presence flow (typically 30 l/s). In case of excess heat or high CO2 content (requires that a CO2 sensor is installed), the air flow is increased up to the maximum flow to reach set points. The built-in presence detector is used for activation after an adjustable time delay. The pressure, that is, the flow in the duct, regulates the gap height in the reactive diffuser for a draft-free air supply throughout the range of strongly under-temperature supply air. The supply air flow is evenly distributed over the reactive devices installed.

Exhaust air and flow balancing
The smart damper DCV-BL is used for exhaust air balancing. Air flows are communicated and shared with other active units via the communication loop. A compensation/offset for fixed airflows can be set.

Controller RCX can control valve actuators (SV) for sequential heat. The system also works with thermostats, but then it is more difficult to use economy mode in the absence and there may be a risk that heat and cooling work simultaneously. However, this scenario can be detected and managed when web server with LINDINSPECT is available via network.

The reactive devices MTC and MTN can work with over-tempered air with good mixing. If the supply air temperature cannot be adjusted for different parts of the property, it will not be an optimal need-controlled solution.

Extra heat or cooling step
Control boxes for heating or cooling stages can be connected directly to the room climate controller.

Extra sensors
Carbon dioxide or air quality sensors can be connected. Signals from sensors are used to control adjustable P-bands.

DCV-RC can flexibly control the open plan office lighting via the presence sensor or via signals from other control units. Via relay box CBR, push buttons and 230 VAC for lighting can be connected and controlled. The lighting is switched on and off either via a signal from the presence sensor or from connected push buttons. Time for ignition from detected presence (an operating mode) can be set, as well as the time for switching off the lighting after the last registered presence. If a more advanced lighting solution is desired, with scenes etc., lighting control SBD can be used for a DALI solution.

The cable used in the construction of the CAN loop is a PVC-free shielded combined feed and communication cable. Room climate controller RCX (DCV-RC) and other nodes are connected to the same CAN bus to form a loop of interconnecting nodes.

Cable lengths
The CAN bus cable can be drawn long distances with respect to communication, but in order for the power supply to be at acceptable levels, the voltage drop must be considered. See the electrical engineering manual.

Power supply and transformers
In a normal situation, a transformer 230/24VAC is installed per 12 to 15 active nodes on the CAN bus. It is a rule of thumb that applies at short distances between the products. See the electrical engineering manual for details.

Pre-assembled smart dampers
Circular designs of the smart damper DCV-BL (as well as other circular smart dampers) are supplied with the regulator and the damper motor pre-mounted on the circular damper with measuring flange. The unit only requires connection of the controller to the combined feed and communication loop.
